NEW DELHI: While announcing an income support scheme for farmers in the interim Budget for 2019-20, Union minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the distress in the farm sector due to falling prices of agriculture commodities. However, a 2016 scheme launched by the government to help farmers get better prices for their produce through an integrated digital market platform still remains underutilized. According to the agriculture ministry, over one crore farmers are registered on the portal and around 45 lakh have benefited from the measure so far.

The government feels this is a notable achievement given the low digital literacy levels among farmers in the hinterlands, but there is plenty of room for improvement given that the number of small and marginal farmers in the country stands at 12 crore, as quoted by the Budget.

The Electronic-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), a pan-India electronic trading portal, was launched in April 2016 to integrate the existing APMC mandis and to create a unified national market for agricultural commodities.

Experts also cite the lack of infrastructure as the reason for the slow traction of e-NAM.

The main purpose of this measure was to create a unified market through online trading platform and promote uniformity by streamlining procedures, and remove information asymmetry between buyers and sellers. It is aimed at promoting real-time price discovery based on actual demand and supply. It offers transparency in auction process and access to a nationwide market for the farmer, with prices commensurate with quality of produce and payment through online mode. Consumers get better produce at reasonable prices.

‘Study needed on e-NAM platform’

Getting adequate prices for agricultural products has always been a major issue. Only about 30 per cent of the agricultural produce is procured by the government and farmers have to sell rest outside. “All mandis have not been integrated to the platform and the lack of infrastructure is hindering its implementation,” said agriculture policy expert Devinder Sharma.A government official said 585 regulated markets of 16 states and two Union territories have been integrated to the e-NAM platform and the government has decided to integrate additional 415 markets by March 2020.

The official said that earlier trade used to take place either within the APMC or between two APMCs situated in the same state. The first Inter State transaction in tomatoes has been carried out between trader of Bareilly in UP and farmer of Haldwani in Uttarakhand in January this year.

NY Attorney General Declares Selling Fake Social Media Followers Is Illegal

NY Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday became the first to crack down on a company using bots and sock-puppet accounts designed to trick consumers.

Influencers, beware: The crackdown on fake followers has begun.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday announced a settlement with a company that had been selling fake followers, likes and views on various social media platforms — including Twitter and YouTube.

Devumi sold fake followers and likes through both computer-operated bots and from sock-puppet accounts, which is when an actual human impersonates many other people. According to the announcement, Devumi used phony accounts that copied real users’ pictures and profiles without their knowledge or consent.

This marks the first time a law enforcement agency has declared it’s illegal to sell such engagement and to use stolen identities to do it.

“Bots and other fake accounts have been running rampant on social media platforms, often stealing real people’s identities to carry out fraud,” said James in a statement. “As people and companies like Devumi continue to make a quick buck by lying to honest Americans, my office will continue to find and stop anyone who sells online deception. With this settlement, we are sending a clear message that anyone profiting off of deception and impersonation is breaking the law and will be held accountable.”

Devumi had also been selling endorsements from social media influencers without disclosing they had been paid, which runs afoul of Federal Trade Commission rules.

Frankfurt Kurnit managing partner and advertising law expert Jeffrey Greenbaum says this sends a clear warning to companies and individuals who monetize social media.

“Brands and influencers that use agencies to help boost their social media engagement can no longer turn a blind eye to where their new likes and followers are coming from,” he says. “They are going to need to ensure that their likes and followers are real. … This settlement stakes out a groundbreaking position — that ‘likes’ and ‘follows’ are actual endorsements.”

New regulations, internet celebrities, and sweeping into new cities-how did the Chinese mobile internet fare in 2018?

China’s mobile internet market, which has been galloping forward for the past 8 years, culminated 2018 with an IPO gold rush that saw 42 companies went public, according to data compiled in a recent report published by market researcher QuestMobile.

The report, aiming to look back at the key developments in China’s mobile internet sector in last year, summarised 2018 in eight trends, from the IPO rush, the rural opportunities, BAT and unicorns acquiring their ways into new markets, to how regulations have had a sweeping influence on the market.

Below are some highlights from the report:

The IPO Gold Rush

Source: QuestMobile.

China ushered in its fourth wave of IPOs in 2018. Hong Kong-listed Xiaomi and Meituan-Dianping, as well as Nasdaq-listed Pinduoduo, were some of the blockbuster public offerings.

Previous major IPOs were by companies that offered specific services—internet platforms, social media and search engines, and e-commerce. The youngest Chinese tech unicorns, however, span multiple verticals.

Take Xiaomi as an example. It’s a smartphone maker as well as an internet company. Meituan-Dianping’s core business lies primarily in food delivery but was already offering hotel bookings and ride-hailing before it was listed in Hong Kong.

The race is getting tougher, and diversity is key to pulling ahead.

The Rural Advantage

Source: QuestMobile.

Market saturation in China’s top-tier cities has led to slowing growth in the country. Growth rates fell from 17.1% in 2017 to a mere 4.2% at the end of 2018.

The rural economy has quickly become an important source of growth. In 2018, lower-tier Chinese cities accounted for 54.7% of the nation’s active internet users.

The Pinduoduo and Qutoutiao are examples of the tech companies that reaped the benefits by focusing their business beyond top-tier cities. They both grew their businesses by tapping China’s rural markets. Pinduoduo’s business model of offering discounts whenever friends make purchases together worked well in smaller cities and towns. Qutoutiao also capitalized on this opportunity, offering media content that was popular among readers in these places.

In 2016, Chinese live streaming took off, growing up to 180% year-on-year. According to internet market research firm iResearch, the market then was estimated to be RMB 20.8 billion (US$3.09 billion), with major players – Song Cheng, Momo, YY, and Tian Ge Interactive – bringing in combined live streaming revenue exceeding RMB 11 billion (US$1.6 billion).

But things have changed. While live streamers still have an audience, short videos have become the popular mode of self-expression. Major tech conglomerates have all launched or backed short video apps. Some examples of these apps include Tencent’s Kuaishou, ByteDance’s Douyin (Tik Tok), Alibaba’s Lu Ke, and Meitu’s MeiPai.

Regulations

One of the major regulatory impacts in 2018 was the indefinite freeze on the issue of new online video gaming licenses.

Source: QuestMobile.

As Chinese online gaming companies were left in limbo, the growth in monthly active users of gaming apps saw a huge decline. Most notably, Tencent’s stock plunged as much as 40%, wiping out US$200 billion of its market cap.

Major Chinese tech companies did not have it easy last year: Meituan-Dianping was battling losses, Xiaomi had to indefinitely stall its domestic listing plans, and Pinduoduo had to tackle counterfeits being listed for sale on its platform. Yet, all three managed to go public.

Looking Forward

It has become a necessity for tech companies to seek different avenues to grow their businesses.

The ongoing trend of “new retail” is expected to see even more adoption, particularly with the introduction of 5G for public usage and broader use of data-driven business operations in the coming year.

Airtel Digital TV DTH channels selection process: Here is how Airtel Digital TV subscribers can choose their 100 or more channels under TRAI’s new rules for DTH operators.

Airtel Digital TV DTH channels selection process: DTH services, as well as cable operators and multi-system operators (MSOs), have already put out their channel prices in compliance TRAI’s new framework, which comes into effect on February 1, 2019. Users can choose to go with one of the packs they like or select individual channels from Ala-Carte category to make their own monthly pack. The number of channels will start from 25 as Airtel by default selects 25 free Doordarshan channels.

Users can choose to go with one of the packs they like or select individual channels from Ala-Carte category to make their own monthly pack.

Several channels are free, while others are paid. The monthly prices for paid channels will be displayed alongside the name of the channel. The total monthly amount that users need to pay will be displayed once users select their 100 or more channels. Finally, click on Confirm to proceed.Advertising

There is also a way to activate channel packs by scanning QR code on their TV using phone’s camera or third-party QR code scanner app. Once users select their monthly channels or packs, they can activate their selection by scanning a QR code on their TV and send it to 54325. The pack will automatically get activated starting February 1.
