6 Girls, Who Ran Away From Shelter Home In Bihar, Found

PATNA: Six of the seven minor girls, who escaped from a government-run shelter home in Bihar’s Mokama town have been found, police said. Five of them are witnesses in the Muzaffarpur sexual assault case
Darbhanga Senior Superintendent of Police Babu Ram said a police team had come from Patna to look for the missing girls, based on the inputs they had gathered during investigation.
Opposition parties lashed out at the NDA government in Bihar, alleging that five of the girls were “witnesses” in the sex scandal being probed by the CBI under the supervision of the Supreme Court, and claimed their escape was a “conspiracy” hatched by the ruling dispensation to protect “big shots”.
“Seven girls have escaped from the shelter home. They are said to have fled after cutting the grill of a window at about 3 am. They were under treatment for their violent behaviour,” Social Welfare Department Director Raj Kumar told news agency PTI. It is yet to be ascertained whether the girls include former inmates of the Muzaffarpur shelter home
Later, Deputy Inspector General (Patna Range) Rajesh Kumar reached the spot for inspection and said, “We are conducting investigations taking all possible angles into account.”
Sniffer dogs and forensic experts were pressed into service to trace the girls who had fled the home situated around 100 km from the state capital.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in state Assembly Tejashwi Yadav tweeted: “Five witnesses of the Muzaffarpur rape case have been made to disappear from Mokama shelter home to protect the chief minister and the government machinery.”

Mumbai, February 24

A key Maratha outfit, that led the quota agitation in Maharashtra, has decided not to extend support to any major political party in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls for “neglecting” its demands.

The Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) will support independent candidates or nominees of smaller parties in the polls, its convener Sanjeev Bhor-Patil said on Saturday.”We are contemplating to support independent candidates or smaller parties in the polls instead of major political parties, such as alliances of BJP-Shiv Sena or Congress-NCP, as they all neglected our key demands,” he said.

He claimed that some members of the community were falsely framed in atrocity cases.”One of our key demands was to sort out the issue of false atrocity cases. However, no political party has taken it seriously. Our another demand was to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations on minimum support price (MSP) for crops,” he said.

Bhor-Patil said MKM leaders will meet in the coming week to chalk out strategy for the general elections.

“We cannot register a political party in the name of ‘Maratha Kranti Morcha’ as it is against our protocol. Hence, we will either support smaller political parties or favourable candidates,” another MKM leader said.

The MKM had earlier spearheaded the agitation for quota for the Maratha community in jobs and education in the state.

The Maharashtra Legislature had in November last year passed a bill proposing 16 per cent reservation in education and government jobs for Marathas, declared as socially and educationally backward class by the government.

The quota was granted in addition to the existing 52 per cent reservation in the state.

Meanwhile, members of Other Backward Class (OBC) communities from Maharashtra will organise a march here on the first day of the state legislature session on Monday for “safeguarding” their existing quota.

The organisers of the protest are also opposing any probable move on part of the state government to induct Marathas into the OBC category. — PTI

Sebi orders impounding of Rs 1 cr from ADF Foods' promoters...

Markets regulator Sebi

New Delhi, Feb 24: Markets regulator Sebi has ordered impounding of alleged illegal gains worth over Rs 1.02 crore from ADF Foods’ promoters Bhavesh Thakkar and Priyanka Thakkar and four others in an insider trading case. The other four are Pallavi N Mehta, Shefali B Mehta, Navin M Mehta and Abhishek Mehta. As per Sebi’s order, on July 27, 2016, ADF Foods informed the BSE and NSE that the board of directors in its meeting on the same date had approved a buyback of equity shares for an aggregate amount not exceeding Rs 18 crore.

On May 21, 2016, the discussion of idea to under take buy back or payment of dividend was first tabled at a meeting, Sebi said. Therefore, Sebi considered the time period from May 21-27 July 2016 as unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI) period when the price sensitive information of buyback remain undisclosed. Sebi conducted a probe and found that entities had access to UPSI and traded in the scrips of the firm during the May 21-July 27, 2016 (UPSI period).

Sebi orders impounding of Rs 1 cr from ADF Foods’ promoters

The regulator further said that it prima facie found that ‘insider’ Bhavesh Thakkar being promoter and executive director of the firm communicated UPSI to other entities whom Sebi classified them as insiders as they were related to Bhavesh and his promoter wife Priyanka. Priyanka, being a promoter, was involved in the fund transfer from her husband (Bhavesh Thakkar) to the other four entities and vice-versa for their trades in scrips of the firm during the UPSI period and thus prima facie violated insider trading norms, the regulator said.

Regarding the other four, Sebi noted that Navin Mehta and Abhishek Mehta, being insiders, traded in the shares of ADF Foods through the trading accounts of Pallavi Mehta and Shefali Mehta when the price sensitive information remained undisclosed in violation of insider trading regulations. Accordingly, Sebi ordered to impound the alleged unlawful gains of Rs 1,02 crore (alleged gains of 77 lakhs with interest of Rs 25 lakh) to be paid jointly and severally. The regulator further added that entities may file their replies to Sebi within 21 days from the date of receipt of this order, if they so desire.

Samsung Galaxy M30 to Xiaomi Redmi Note 7: Top premium budget phones coming to India soon

Budget smartphones are going to get better with “diamond cut” graphic design, 48-megapixel camera, and bigger 5,000mAh battery. (HT Photo)

If you’re planning to buy a new budget smartphone, you may want to wait for a few weeks more. From Xiaomi to Realme, top Android companies are going to refresh their budget phone series in coming days. Samsung is also joining the race with its Galaxy M30, third phone from its newly launched M series. It is also planning to launch new premium budget A-series in India soon.

Samsung Galaxy M30

Galaxy M series debuted with M10 and M20 budget smartphones earlier this year. Galaxy M30, which will compete with the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and upcoming Redmi Note 7, is set to launch on February 27.

Samsung Galaxy M30 will feature a triple-rear camera setup, a first for Samsung’s budget smartphone series. Galaxy M30 is expected to launch with 13-megapixel camera and two 5-megapixel cameras. The smartphone will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery.

Other expected features of Samsung Galaxy M30 include Exynos 7904 processor, up to 6GB of RAM, and up to 128GB storage. The smartphone is expected to launch at a starting price of Rs 15,000 in India.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

Xiaomi will introduce its Redmi Note 7 in India on February 28. Featuring a 48-megapixel rear camera, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 comes with a refreshed design featuring a gradient back with glossy finish. It has 6.3-inch FHD+ display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D curved glass. It also does away with the wider notch and uses a dewdrop notch on the front.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 660 processor. In terms of connectivity it supports USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. It has a 4,000mAh battery.

Realme 3

According to a few teasers, Realme 3 will feature a dual-rear camera setup. According to reports, Realme 3 will continue with aggressive specifications and price combination.

Samsung Galaxy A series

After introducing a brand new Galaxy M series of budget phones, Samsung announced a big overhaul to its Galaxy A series. The company said it’s going to introduce its premium Galaxy A series to the budget segment as well. The lowest-end Samsung Galaxy A phone will be available in India for around Rs 10,000. The premium Galaxy A series, however, will go up to Rs 50,000. Samsung is betting big on its Galaxy A series as it aims to build $4 billion brand out of it, just in India, by the end of this year.

‘Lockheed Martin’s proposal is attractive sales pitch’

'Lockheed Martin's proposal is attractive sales pitch'

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) Lockheed Martin’s offer to make F-21s — F-16s in new avatar — in India has opened up prospects for the Indian fifth generation fighter development programme but a possible tie-up with the US aircraft-maker will hinge on its commitment to honour license issues and the extent of technology transfer.

Senior officials told IANS that on the face of it, the Lockheed Martin’s proposal looks lucrative but as of now it remains only in the realm of an attractive sales pitch as there are many details that need to be thrashed out before it can become a win-win proposition for both sides.

The most important gain though could be for the Indian Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) which is meant to be a futuristic 5th generation fighter.

The project is still on paper and Lockheed Martin with its experience of F-35 and F-22 — the only two viable 5th generation fighters in the game — has gone through the process and learnt all the lessons. Even if it does not share all these lessons, the company can ensure life-long component support to India if such a partnership materializes, said an official.

India had walked out of a deal with Russia to jointly develop a 5th generation fighter because there was no gain in terms of transfer of technology. The project had turned into “joint production” instead of “joint development”, forcing India to call it off.

Lockheed Martin already has a thriving partnership with Tata Advanced System. The Indian company is making rapid strides making bodies of C-130s and Chinooks and will build C-295 turbo props for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and wings for F-16s.

India can benefit only if Lockheed Martin commits itself to transfer of technology and helping in building an ecosystem for aviation manufacturing. If technologies in terms of avionics, radars and sensors flow into AMCA, it will greatly help the project.

Lockheed Martin is not the only company which has offered to set up production facilities in India. But it has an advantage in terms of sheer numbers.

There are over 4,000 F-16s flying all over the world and if they all depend on Indian production facility for product support, it will sustain the Indian entity for a long time. In comparison, there are only around 100 Gripens or 400 Rafales in business as of now.

CRISPR genetically-modified girls ‘given ENHANCED brains’, warn scientists

Modern medicine has worked miracles in improving the quality and length of life. And science’s influence in medical matters could well accelerate soon, if CRISPR’s immense potential is harnessed. But news that twins in China had their genes modified before birth, in a premature case of human experimentation, shocked the world.

CRISPR holds extraordinary promise for treating and preventing a wide range of diseases, from cancer, heart disease and even mental illness.

But ethical concerns have been made about the use genome editing, in addition to fears CRISPR could be misused or even transformed into the next generation of biological weapon.

Such ethical concerns appeared validated after news broke in January about two genetically edited girls born in China.

And a leading scientist has now voiced fears the genetically modified babies may have had their brains changed.

Twins Lulu and Nana were thought to have had their genes modified before birth by a Chinese scientific team using the CRISPR editing tool.

CRISPR genetically-modified girls ‘given ENHANCED brains’, warn scientists

CRISPR: The premature case of human experimentation shocked the world (Image: Getty)

The goal was to make the girls immune to infection by HIV, the AIDS causing virus.

And new research shows that the same alteration introduced into the girls’ DNA, deletion of a gene called CCR5, could be linked to greater success in school.

Alcino J. Silva, a neurobiologist at the University of California said: “The answer is likely yes, it did affect their brains.”

“The simplest interpretation is that those mutations will probably have an impact on cognitive function in the twins,” says Silva.

He says the exact effect on the girls’ cognition is impossible to predict, and “that is why it should not be done.”

The Chinese team, led by He Jiankui of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, claimed it had controversially used CRISPR to delete CCR5 from human embryos, some of which were later used to create pregnancies.

HIV requires the CCR5 gene to enter human blood cells.

The CRISPR experiment was widely condemned as irresponsible, and He is under investigation in China.

News of the first gene-edited babies also fuelled the debate whether CRISPR technology could one day be used to create super-intelligent humans, perhaps as part of a biotechnology race between the US and China.

There is no evidence that He actually set out to modify the twins’ intelligence.

CRISPR: Twins Lulu and Nana had their genes modified before birth by a Chinese scientific team (Image: Getty)

It is understood the controversial Chinese scientist never reached out to researchers studying the effects of CCR5 on cognition, as he did to others from whom he hoped to get scientific advice or support.

“As far as I know, we never heard from him,” says Miou Zhou, a professor at the Western University of Health Sciences in California.

Although He never consulted the brain researchers, the Chinese scientist was certainly aware of the link between CCR5 and cognition.

It was first shown in 2016 by Zhou and Silva, who found that removing the gene from mice significantly improved their memory.

The team had looked at more than 140 different genetic alterations to find which made mice smarter.

Silva says because of his research, he sometimes interacts with figures in Silicon Valley and elsewhere who have, in his opinion, an unhealthy interest in designer babies with better brains.

This is why, when the birth of the twins began to make headlines, Silva says he immediately wondered if it had been an attempt at this kind of alteration.

“I suddenly realised holy s**t, they are really serious about this b******t,” says Silva.

“My reaction was visceral repulsion and sadness.”
