You may also notice that your skin has turned a shade of yellow, or that your urine is slightly darker than normal.

“Most lung cancers do not cause any symptoms until they have spread, but some people with early lung cancer do have symptoms,” said the American Cancer Society.

“If you go to your doctor when you first notice symptoms, your cancer might be diagnosed at an earlier stage, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

“If lung cancer spreads to distant organs, it may cause yellowing of the skin and eyes [jaundice], from cancer spread to the liver.”

The NHS added: “Jaundice is caused by the build-up in your body of a yellow substance called bilirubin.

Other warning signs of jaundice include having itchy skin, or passing paler-coloured stools than normal, it said.

You should dial 111 straight away if you think you may have jaundice. They can provide advice on what to do next, said the NHS.

Your jaundice could also be caused by gallstones, alcoholic liver disease, pancreatitis, hepatitis, or sickle cell disease.

The retired plumber from Oxford was struck down with mesothelioma – a cancer of the lung linked to asbestos exposure. Ralph had no symptoms of lung cancer and was only diagnosed after a routine health check. “At 64 I was looking into my pensions when I was advised to get a medical due to my job,” said Ralph.

“In September 2013, I had an X-ray that revealed a shadow on my lung. I had no symptoms, I felt fine and had no reason to believe I had an issue. A week later, the doctor said it was lung cancer.

“I’m a common-sense man, I knew it was a death sentence. On average, people can expect 12 to 18 months – I didn’t expect to live that long.”

After discovery of the disease, Ralph was told his only option was to remove the lining of his lungs.

Unhappy with this, Ralph decided to explore other options, leading him to the discovery of immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that boosts the body’s natural defences to fight cancer.

Under the treatment of Professor Angus Dalgleish and the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, Ralph was placed on a trial for an immunotherapy drug called IMM-101, during which he received injections of the drug every four to six months, alongside regular scans.

“Four years passed [since diagnosis], and although I had to quit work, I was well and built a new house for me and my wife,” Ralph said.

“I had a brief spell out after falling from my attic, (two vertebrae and a cracked rib), but overall an excellent quality of life.

“I was under the care of Churchill Hospital in Oxford who were excellent and helped monitor my illness.

“They offered me chemotherapy, but I knew straight from the off that it wasn’t an option for me – I’d rather pass away.”

Six years since diagnosis, Ralph is now cancer free, which he said he “can only put down to the drug they provided”.

“I was supposed to have died by the end of 2014. But immunotherapy has, so far, helped me escape death,” he said.

Professor Dalgleish’s research is funded by a charity called the Institute for Cancer Vaccines and Immunotherapy, which exclusively funds research into fighting cancer with vaccines and immunotherapy.

According to Professor Dalgleish, the immunotherapy vaccine contains “minimal” toxicity, meaning it has no side effects compared to chemotherapy.

“With Ralph he got this and low dose Naltrexone together. He has done six years and was not expected to last more than six to 18 months maximum,” said Professor Dalgleish.

“These new treatments for the management of cancer need more funding so immunotherapy becomes the first port of call along with chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer patients.”

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. It is often regarded as the most serious type of the disease, as it can be difficult to treat when the cancer has spread.

Symptoms don’t often appear until the cancer has spread, meaning the outlook isn’t as good as it is for many other types of cancer.

Overall, about one in three people with lung cancer live for at least a year after they’re diagnosed and about one in 20 people live at least 10 years, according to the NHS.

Decades of research into anxiety and depression have resulted in the development of models that help explain the causes and dimensions of the two disorders.

For all of their well-established utility however, these models measure differences between individuals and are derived from studies designed using few assessments that can be months or even years apart.

In other words, the models are highly informative, but not optimal for examining what’s happening emotionally in a particular person from moment to moment.

Now, a University at Buffalo psychologist is extending that valuable research to repeatedly and frequently measure symptoms of specific individuals, in real time, to learn how immediate feelings relate to later symptoms.

The research casts anxiety and depression in a manner not previously studied and the results suggest that some emotions linger in a way that predicts feelings beyond what’s happening at specific times. This information could provide treatment benefits for patients struggling with the disorders, according to Kristin Gainey, an assistant professor in UB’s psychology department and the study’s author.

“Clinicians aren’t primarily interested in how one person’s symptoms compare to someone else, which is what most studies focus on. Rather, they’re most interested in how to shift the feelings of someone with anxiety or depression. In other words, they want to understand how to change the emotional experiences of a given individual over time and across different situations,” says Gainey, an expert on emotion and affect in mood and anxiety disorders and a recent recipient of one of the American Psychological Association’s Early Career Distinguished Scientific awards. “The only way to get at that directly is to measure these processes repeatedly within a person as they’re happening.”

To do that, Gainey conducted baseline assessments on 135 participants, each of whom were already seeking some kind of psychological treatment.

Three times a day for 10 weeks, the participants received surveys on their smartphones about their feelings and symptoms. They completed the survey within 20 minutes of its arrival.

“That generated enough reports to provide a good sense for each person’s fluctuations and trajectories of symptoms and affect (defined as the objective feeling state that’s part of an emotion),” says Gainey.

A smartphone provides a portrait of immediacy that questionnaires distributed in a lab that summarize feelings over extended periods are unable to achieve.

“We can’t always remember accurately how we felt days and weeks ago, especially if there were some days you felt really bad and other days you felt great,” she says. “That’s not easy to summarize in a single index.”

Anxiety and depression are each unique disorders, but they often appear together in a single patient. Both disorders share high levels of negative emotions, such as fear, sadness and anger, while low levels of positive emotions, like excitement and interest, are unique to depression.

Gainey says it’s not surprising that particular affective states, like feeling happy or feeling sad, might be responsible for symptoms experienced soon afterward. What researchers don’t know much about is how long those affects tend to persist, and which specific symptoms they lead to hours or days later.

“This study let us see that some affects were short-lived, but for depression, if you were feeling high levels of negative affect, even if we control for how depressed a participant was at that time, it was still predictive of increased depression 24 hours later,” says Gainey.

That might suggest that clinicians could track peoples’ positive and negative affect in real time and plot trajectories that are indicative of increased risk.

“If we can identify specific risk factors for increased symptoms in real time, we could even use smartphones to send suggestions about helpful strategies or alert the person’s mental health care provider,” she says.

A new research, to be published in the March issue of Obesity suggests that the reality of dietary self-monitoring may be far less disagreeable than the perception. The study found that after six months of monitoring their dietary intake, the most successful participants in an online behavioural weight-loss programme spent an average of just 14.6 minutes per day on the activity.

Programme participants recorded the calories and fat for all foods and beverages they consumed, as well as the portion sizes and the preparation methods. Conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont and the University of South Carolina, the study is the first to quantify the amount of time that dietary self-monitoring actually takes for those who successfully shed those extra kilos. Lead author of the study Jean Harvey said, “People hate it; they think it’s onerous and awful, but the question we had was: How much time does dietary self-monitoring really take?” adding, “The answer is, not very much.”

Harvey and her colleagues looked at the dietary self-monitoring habits of 142 participants in an online behavioural weight control intervention. For 24 weeks, participants met weekly for an online group session led by a trained dietitian. Furthermore, volunteers logged their daily food intake online, in the process leaving behind a record of how much time they spent on the activity and how often they logged in.

Participants who lost 10% of their body weight — the most successful members of the cohort — spent an average of 23.2 minutes per day on self-monitoring in the first month of the programme. By the sixth month, the time had dropped to 14.6 minutes. Notably, what predicted the most weight-loss success was not the time spent monitoring but the frequency of log-ins, confirming the conclusions of earlier studies.

Harvey said, “Those who self-monitored three or more time per day, and were consistent day after day, were the most successful.” Harvey attributes the decrease in time needed for self-monitoring to participants’ increasing efficiency in recording data and to the web program’s progressive ability to complete words and phrases automatically after just a few letters were entered. The study’s most important contribution, Harvey said, may be in helping prospective weight-losers set behavioural targets.

  • the child shows signs of having lost too much blood, such as looking pale, having little energy, feeling dizzy, or passing out
  • the child begins coughing up or vomiting blood
  • the child has a bleeding disorder or is taking blood thinners

Medical treatment

Children with severe nosebleeds should see a healthcare professional, who will try to stop the bleeding.

Treatment options for nosebleeds include:

  • applying silver nitrate to blood vessels to seal them
  • cauterizing, or burning, the blood vessels to seal them
  • packing the nose with medicated gauze to constrict the blood vessels

After stopping the bleeding, a doctor will examine the child to determine the cause. In some cases, the child may require surgery to fix a problem with the blood vessels in the nose.


An injury or blow to the face can irritate blood vessels in the nose.

Most nosebleeds are anterior nosebleeds, which means that the bleeding occurs in the front, soft part of the nose. This area of the nose contains many small blood vessels that can rupture and bleed if they become irritated or inflamed.

Posterior nosebleeds develop in the rear of the nose and rarely occur in children. This type of nosebleed tends to be heavier, and it can be more difficult to stop the bleeding.

Irritation of the blood vessels is a common cause of anterior nosebleeds. Several things can irritate the blood vessels in the nose, including:

  • dry air
  • picking the nose
  • nasal allergies
  • an injury or blow to the nose or face, for example, from a ball or fall
  • sinusitis, common colds, the flu, and other infections that affect the nasal passages
  • nasal polyps
  • overuse of nasal sprays

Less common causes of nosebleeds in children can include:

  • conditions that affect bleeding or blood clotting, such as hemophilia
  • certain medications, including blood thinners
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • cancer

Prevention tips

Although it may not be possible to prevent all nosebleeds in children, a person can take steps to help reduce their occurrence. These include:

  • treating allergies to prevent inflammation in the nose
  • using saline (saltwater) nasal sprays to keep the child’s nose moist
  • running a humidifier or vaporizer in the child’s bedroom to prevent the air from drying out
  • keeping children’s nails trimmed to prevent injuries due to nose picking
  • encouraging children to wear appropriate protective equipment during sports or other activities where injury to the nose is possible


Nosebleeds are a common occurrence in young children and rarely a cause for concern. A person can usually treat the bleeding at home by applying continuous, gentle pressure to the soft part of the child’s nose for around 10 minutes.

Call 911 or take the child to the emergency room if they seem dizzy or weak or if they pass out. It is also necessary to seek immediate medical attention if the bleeding is very heavy, does not stop after 20 minutes, or occurs after a fall or head injury.

Most nosebleeds in children are due to dry air, nose picking, nasal allergies, or other factors that irritate the delicate blood vessels in the front of the nose.

A person should consult a doctor or pediatrician if the child has frequent nosebleeds or has recently started taking a new medication.
