By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Feb 26 (IANS) Finally, India has done it at the Oscars. A ‘period film unlike “Lagaan”, “Devdas” or “Baahubali” — entitled “Period. End Of Sentence”, has won the Oscar in the Best Short Documentary category. But is this really reason for us to rejoice after the repeated rebuffs we’ve been subjected to at the Oscars?

Why must poverty still be the benchmark for international attention? Has nothing changed since Satyajit Ray’s “Pather Panchali”? Every time the Academy Awards deign to look at us, it is always for films that highlight the squalor and deprivation at the grassroot level. Just take a look at the films from India that have received attention at the Oscars: Mehboob Khan’s “Mother India”, Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay”, Deepa Mehta’s “Water”, Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”…

What do we see in common here? Poverty, of course. None of Zoya Akhtar’s fabulous films would have qualified for Oscar attention before “Gully Boy”, I can tell you that for sure.

Though this film about menstrual hardships in rural India is not technically an Indian film — its director Rayka Zehtabchi is an Iranian-American and its producer Melissa Burton is US — “Period. End Of Sentence” is about empowering the rural Indian women, and its co-producer Guneet Monga is an Indian.

So let’s applaud our first victory at the Oscars since A.R. Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty won the trophy in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire”.

Some of the major Oscars this year were a welcome swerve into the unexpected. The best actress Oscar has not gone to Glenn Close for her overrated performance in “The Wife”, but to Olivia Coleman for her delightful turn as a sexually active, somewhat daft queen of England whose rule would have gone unnoticed were it not for Coleman’s dazzling performance in “The Favourite”.

The Oscar for best actor has been given to the Egyptian actor Rami Malek for that hyped, over-rated performance as musical legend Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Sadly, the more meritorious and Oscar worthy rock-stadia musical “A Star Is Born”, featuring the very exceptional Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, which was outstanding on every level has been largely snubbed by the Oscars.

Rather go gaga over the singer of the song “Radio Gaga’ than honour Lady Gaga, eh?

Rami Malek’s relatively mediocre performance being honoured by an Oscar for best actor was matched by Mahershala Ali’s triumph in the best supporting actor category as a sophisticated gay pianist in “The Green Book”.

Though I thoroughly approve of “Green Book” getting the Oscar for best picture, the award in the performing category should have gone to Viggo Mortensen as the African pianist’s chauffeur in “Green Book”.

Mortensen is terrific all the way, far superior to Rami Malek’s one-note performance as Mercury. Nothing mercurial about Malek. The same goes for this year’s Oscar winners. No surprises, except the much-touted Black Panther’s complete obliteration among the winners in the major categories.

Just goes to show, hype doesn’t always rule.

Another setback for Arnab Goswami as Telecom watchdog acts tough for unethical distribution tactics

Another setback for Arnab Goswami as Telecom watchdog acts tough for unethical distribution tactics

The statement by the telecom watchdog said, “The authority, in exercise of the powers conferred upon it under section 13, read with clause (b) of sub-section (I) of section 11 of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997 (24 of 1997) and in order to protect the interest of service providers and consumers and ensure orderly growth of the sector, hereby directs all distributors of the television channels to ensure that the television channels of same genre, as declared by the broadcasters, are placed together consecutively. One channel shall appear at one place only, failing which action shall be taken against such distributors, under the provisions of TRAI Act, 1997.”

The TRAI said that it had received many complaints alleging transmission of
Television Channels on dual LCN or placement of television channels by the distributors of TV channels, out of the genre declared by the broadcaster.

The directive by the TRAI said, “Every broadcaster shall declare the genre of its channels and such genre shall be either ‘Devotional’ or ‘General Entertainment’ or ‘Infotainment’ or ‘Kids’ or ‘Movies’ or ‘Music’ or ‘News and Current Affairs’ or ‘Sports’ or ‘Miscellaneous’.”

Republic Media Network was also accused of flouting regulations by placing the newly-launched Republic Bharat channel on the landing pages of close to 100 distribution platforms and also placing it outside of the ‘news and current affairs’ genre.

Launched on 2 February, Republic Bharat had announced on 14 February that it recorded a whopping 7.3 crore of weekly audience in the first week of it going on air. Its tweet had read, “#BharatBlockbusterStart | Sensational start for @Republic_Bharat: 6 days – 6 channels overtaken, with an astounding reach of 73 million!”

Experts say that Republic Bharat may pose a huge threat to Aaj Tak, which has enjoyed the market leader’s position for more than 15 years. Aaj Tak is owned by TV Today Network, one of the complainants to the TRAi.

Earlier this week, a Srinagar court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Goswami in a defamation case.

Goswami had launched Republic TV in 2017 with the help of BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Ronit Roy: My daughter’s absence in my life will always pinch me

Ronit Roy: My daughter's absence in my life will always pinch me

Ronit Roy talked about his strained relationship with daughter Ona.

Actor Ronit Roy is back with Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain Season 2. The actor reprises the role of Rohit Mehra in the Alt Balaji series. The show revolves around Rohit, Ananya (Mona Singh) and Poonam (Gurdip Kohli). In the first season, Rohit falls in love with Ananya. He parts ways with his first wife Poonam to marry Ananya. In the second season, Rohit deals with the aftermath of not being prepared for what comes along with marrying an independent woman. The series deals with complexities of relationships.

In an exclusive chat with India Today Online, Ronit Roy talked about his character and also drew parallels between him and Rohit.

Excerpts:

A thing you like and dislike about Rohit?
See, if I tell something about Rohit, don’t take it as I am talking ill about Delhi. The story is set in Delhi. Earlier, fathers used pressurize their kids to follow their footsteps. They asked their kids to get into the same business as themselves. Here Rohit’s father wanted him to be a CA as he was a CA. Rohit Mehra belongs to Delhi. Why did he fall in love with Ananya. He saw the solution to his broken dreams in Ananya. She was artistic hence the two minds calibrated as both the minds spoke the same language and understood each other better. What one thing Rohit might not have realised is to be in love and spend two hours is fine but when you live under the same roof then obviously you have fallen in love with a woman who has an individualistic artistic approach to life. She will not be the same as Poonam.

Do you think Rohit was not prepared to marry Ananya?
There are two ways to live life. I am talking about myself. There are two sides to me. If we have to go there we plan according to our kids’ requirement. But if you ask the real Ronit Roy, I will take my backpack and leave. I have done it in the US. I have travelled the entire US without prepaying for a ticket. Both the lives are good, it depends on which one you want to live. Having said that, once you have a family you can’t lead the life that you want to live. The whole point of love is sharing; caring, understanding, supporting and maintaining the individualities of the person you are in a relationship with. That respect. So, if there is no respect, there is no love. Love comes hand in hand with respect.

You have been working with Ekta Kapoor for a long time. Did you have any questions when you were offered this role?
When I work with Ekta (Kapoor), I don’t have any questions. It was 2003 and it had been 2.5 years since I was working with Ekta and I had some issues with my writer. I told the writer that this is not possible and it is stupidity. He asked me to talk to Ekta as they’ve written according to the narrative. I texted Ekta about it and she asked me to trust her and do it. And, I did it. After that I never called or messaged Ekta for such things. It has been 19 years of association with Ekta and in these years I have learnt. I respect her individuality and she respects mine. And, how does she do that. She asks her creatives not to teach me and let me do what I want and I respect her by placing my complete trust in her. I don’t need to ask her questions because she will be more concerned about her show than I am about my character. About 15 years back I placed my trust in her and that trust is still in a very rewarding situation.

You’ve played complex characters in past. Be it Mr. Bajaj of Kasautii or your character in Udaan. Was playing Rohit a challenging task for you?
It wasn’t challenging at all. You can google about me. Not like this. I haven’t been married and fallen in love with someone but I have a daughter who is 28-year-old but I have never stayed with her. I have learned to live with it. I have lost her childhood, which is not coming back.

Did it overpower while you were doing scenes with Pooja Banerjee (Baani in Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain)?
I am not like other actors. I haven’t been to acting school. I haven’t learnt the craft. A lot of actors talk about the process and how they bring out the character from within. I don’t know that. It’s a part of my life. It’s in my psychosis, in my subconscious mindMy daughter will be my daughter till I am alive and her absence in my life will always pinch me. Her childhood is not coming back. It is a part of who I am. I don’t need to pull out or push it in or open my box. It’s all there. It’s me.

At the age of 53, how do you deal with so much of female attention?
Age is got to do nothing with anything. It’s been a long time since I have been doing TV Since, I have been receiving love, which has more female than male. What can I say? I am grateful for being on the right side.
