Pak actor Jamal Shah on IAF hero Abhinandan’s release: Imran Khan just responded to public sentiment

Pak actor Jamal Shah on IAF hero Abhinandan's release: Imran Khan just responded to public sentiment

Pakistani actor Jamal Shah

The past month has been a turbulent one. After the Pulwama attack on February 14 by Pakistani terrorist group Jaish-E-Mohammad, India retaliated with air strikes in Balakot on February 26. Things reached a breaking point when on February 27, the Indian government confirmed that an Indian Air Force MiG-21 was shot down by Pakistan, and the pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, had been taken into Pakistan custody. Much to India’s relief, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan today declared that he would be sent back home tomorrow safely as a goodwill and peace gesture.

IndiaToday. In spoke to Pakistani actor and filmmaker Jamal Shah who agreed heartily with the gesture and said that he would’ve done the same. “I would have done the same. A majority in Pakistan wanted to do that [send him home]. Imran just responded to popular sentiment.”

The tension between the two countries infiltrated the cinematic realm, as a ban was declared on Pakistani artistes working in the Indian film industry. Actors like Ajay Devgn declared that they would not release their films in Pakistan. And after the Balakot air strikes, the release of Indian films was banned in Pakistan.

Speaking about this, Shah said that art and culture is a strong form of communication that can bring people closer to each other and help establish dialogue that can bridge all kinds of distances and divides. “We [India and Pakistan] share music, art, folklore and all other forms of tangible and intangible forms of association. We can be the most prosperous neighbours if we give peace a chance,” he said.

Like many from both sides of the border, he abhors the idea of war. “The recent skirmishes are a logical outcome of the flawed policies and it is scary because we are two nuclear nations. War can only bring miseries, distraction and poverty to this region where over 70% of our population have already lived below poverty line.” On a hopeful note he said, Let’s hope sense will prevail current attacks and counterattacks.”‘

In future, if the situation between the two countries is better, would he want to work in the Indian film industry? I am an artist and a filmmaker which does not make me any special because I believe that every normal human being strives for peaceful coexistence. But yes, why not if there is a meaningful film offered to me. I most certainly will do it. Likewise, I would like to cast a few Indian actors to be in my future films.”

He added, “Indian film Industry still has the pre-partition nostalgic memories of great minds working together as writers, composers, lyricists, composers and actors. I would like to help create conditions where our best talent can complement each other.”

TOKYO: A baby born in Tokyo weighing the same as a large onion has gone home healthy, become the smallest newborn boy in the world to leave hospital safely.

The tiny tot weighed just 268 grams — under 10 ounces — when he was delivered at 24 weeks, reportedly after he stopped growing in the womb.

He was so small he fit in an adult’s cupped hands. But after five months of treatment, he now weighs 3.238 kilos, is feeding normally, and has been discharged, Keio University Hospital said.

“I can only say I’m happy that he has grown this big because honestly, I wasn’t sure he could survive,” the boy’s mother said.

Doctor Takeshi Arimitsu, who treated the infant, said he wanted to tell people that “there is a possibility that babies will be able to leave the hospital in good health even though they are born small”.

Keio University Hospital said the boy was believed to now hold the record for the smallest newborn boy to be discharged from a hospital in good health.

The record was previously held by a boy born in Germany in 2009 weighing just 274 grams, the hospital said, citing a registry put together by University of Iowa for the world’s tiniest surviving babies.

The smallest surviving girl was born in Germany in 2015 weighing 252 grams, according to the registry.

The survival rate of the smallest babies is substantially lower for boys compared with girls.

Experts are still not entirely sure why, though there have been suggestions it could be partly related to the slower development of lungs in male babies, Keio hospital said.

The baby was discharged last week, two months after his initial due date, local media said.

Japan has one of the world’s lowest rates of infant mortality, according to UNICEF.

SRINAGAR: Indian and Pakistani troops on Thursday again exchanged heavy small arms and mortar fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. One woman resident was killed, an off-duty soldier was critically injured and another woman was injured in the “unprovoked” Pakistani shelling, the officials said.

Defence spokesman Lt. Col. Davendra Anand said in Jammu that Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire agreement by initiating unprovoked shelling of mortars and firing by small arms in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch early Thursday.

The shelling and firing, he said, started at 6 am and continued for one hour. “The own forces (Indian troops) retaliated strongly and effectively. Firing stopped at about 7 am,” he said.

The cross-LoC shelling and firing resumed in the same sector in the afternoon. The Army said that the Pakistani troops again resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling at 1 pm and that the Indian troops responded to it “strongly and befittingly”.

Did anyone die at all in the air strike in Pak: Mamata

Did anyone die at all in the air strike in Pak: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asked whether the air strikes by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on terror camps in Pakistan resulted in any casualties at all.

Questioning media reports that claimed that 300 to 350 people died in the air strikes, she also asked whether the bombs missed the target.

“From day one I am hearing especially on national TV channels that 300-350 people have died in the air strike. We want to know how many people actually died. Did anyone die at all? Where were the bombs dropped? Were the bombs dropped at the right place?” Mamata said while speaking to reporters at the State Secretariat.

Citing reports by international media, the chief minister pointed out that some of them have said that no such incident took place and there were no casualties.

“I am saying this on the basis of media reports. I have read reports in the New York Times and have seen reports by Reuters. They are saying that no such incidents took place. The bombs fell in some other place and missed the target. Some of them are saying that only one person died,” she said.

The chief minister also said that the armed forces should be given the opportunity to tell the truth.

“So what is the truth? We are totally with our forces. But even then we want that the forces should be given an opportunity to tell the truth. The people of the country should know the truth,” said the chief minister.

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not holding any meeting with Opposition parties after the terror attack on CRPF jawans in Pulwama and the air strike on terror camps in Pakistan she further questioned the reports regarding casualties in the air strike.

“There is a media war going on. Till date the prime minister has not held a single meeting with Opposition parties neither after the Pulwama incident nor after air strike which is being talked about now. I can ask how many people died in the air strike? Who died? What actually happened?,” she said.

The chief minister also said that she does not want any war for the sake of politics.

“We don’t want war for the sake of politics. If war takes place in the interests of the country then our full support is with the country. We don’t want war for political interests and for winning an election. We want peace,” she said.

She further claimed that even after incidents of attack on the armed forces such as the one in Uri and Pathankot, the Centre did not take any concrete action.

California warning: Earthquakes NOT biggest threat – prepare for MEGA-STORMS

California is situated on he deadly San Andreas and Hayward Faults, and experts believe it is only a matter of time before the ‘big one’ hits. In 2008, a report from the US Geological Survey said that a 7.8 earthquake lasting just two minutes on the southern San Andreas fault – which is 810 miles in total – would result in 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries, $200billion (£138bn) in damage and lengthy disruptions to the surrounding areas. However, experts warn there could be an even bigger threat to the southwestern State: mega-storms.

A team of scientists believe the next California mega-storms will be comparable with the state’s winter storms of 1861 and 1862.

These storms killed thousands of people and dumped a 300-mile-long (482-kilometre-long) lake in the middle of California. An analysis by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who have dubbed the next storm the Atmospheric River 1,000 (ARkstorm), revealed that it could break the Whittier Narrows Dam in Los Angeles County.

This would see flooding of up to six metres in some areas of California, and would put 1.5 million people in danger.

ARkstorm would also cause up to $735 BILLION worth of damage, according to the report.

The storm is predicted to happen every 500 to 1000 years, and the report warns that officials need to begin preparing for it.

It said: “Responders and government managers at all levels could be encouraged to conduct risk assessments, and devise the full spectrum of exercises, to exercise ability of their plans to address a similar event.”

However, other experts warn the report could be underestimating the scenario.

Water historian and Whittier Narrows area expert David Reid told The Times: “The false sense of security included in the phrase ‘900-year flood’ combined with the promises of 20th century water infrastructure have put us in a bind.

“That’s because a mega-flood is impossible to predict. And if the water infrastructure fails, we’re in big trouble.”

Why are the Japanese fearing another tsunami soon?

Why are the Japanese fearing another tsunami soon?

28 Feb 2019

More than 12 rare oarfish were caught in different islands of Japan this year.

Now that’s a worrying news, especially for Japan.

That is because, according to Japanese folklore, the oarfish are rare and known to be the harbinger of natural disasters.

To give a perspective, before the 2011 tsunami in Japan, dozens of oarfish were seen just a year earlier.

Here’s more.

Oarfish have large bodies and red fins like a dragon

Details

Notably, oarfish reside 200-1,000 meters below the surface of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

The oarfish have serpentine silvery bodies and are large and elongated in size.

Their fins are red in color, giving them a dragon-like appearance.

It’s said that they shift to shallower seas ahead of underwater earthquakes, possibly because of electromagnetic changes which are caused by tectonic activity.

Dozens of oarfish were seen a year before 2011 tsunami

Fact

In 2010, a year before the devastating Fukushima tsunami-earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku in northeast Japan, in which more than 20,000 lost their lives and many went missing, dozens of oarfish were seen on Japan’s coastline. This only made the myth stronger.

Two oarfish were caught last month, both died subsequently

Discovery

The oarfish are known as ‘Ryugu no tsukai’ or ‘Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace’ in Japanese.

On January 28, two oarfish of 3.6 and 4 meters were caught in a net alive near the Okinawa island.

Unfortunately, the fishes died while they were on their way to an aquarium.

One of them was found torn in half when it was being unloaded.

Fishes’ remains are to be preserved as specimens

Signal

The dead fishes’ remains will be preserved as specimens.

Now, their discovery, along with the other oarfish, has sparked a new fear on social media, which feels a disaster is about to hit Japan.

“I had only ever heard stories about this fish. When I saw them at the port, I was quite shocked,” Takashi Yamauchi, the Yomitan Fisheries Cooperative Association, told media.

Experts dismiss the mythical link between oarfish sightings and disasters

Myth

However, experts have quashed the theories.

Also, no scientific relationship has been found between oarfish sightings and natural disasters.

Satomi Higa of the Yomitan Fisheries Cooperative Association said, “They look mysterious and beautiful,” probably that’s how the myth started.

Kasuza Saiba, Uozu Aquarium keeper, reasons changes in Earth’s crust or global warming could “cause the current to stir and push creatures to the surface.”
