Scrapping India’s trade privileges could hit American consumers, US senators say

Last June, India said it would step up import duties varying from 20 percent to 120 percent on a slew of U.S. farm, steel and iron products, angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminium tariffs.(REUTERS)

A U.S. plan to end preferential duty-free imports of up to $5.6 billion from India could raise costs for American consumers, two U.S. senators have told their country’s trade office, urging a delay in adopting the plan, and seeking more negotiations.

If President Donald Trump presses ahead with his plan to end the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) for India, it could lose the status in early May, Indian officials have said, raising the prospect of retaliatory tariffs.

India is the world’s largest beneficiary of the GSP, dating from the 1970s, but trade ties with the U.S. have widened over what Trump calls its high tariffs and concerns over New Delhi’s e-commerce policies.

“While we agree that there are a number of market access issues that can and should be addressed, we do remain concerned that the withdrawal of duty concessions will make Indian exports of eligible products to the United States costlier,” the senators, John Cornyn and Mark Warner, wrote.

“Some of these costs will likely be passed on to American consumers”.

In their Friday letter, the co-chairs of the Senate’s India caucus of more than 30 senators called for withdrawal to be delayed until the end of India’s 39-day general elections, which began on Thursday, with results expected on May 23.

Allowing for talks to continue beyond the elections would underscore the importance of the trade ties, presenting an opportunity to resolve market access issues and improve the overall U.S.-India relationship for years to come, they added.

If the United States scraps duty-free access for about 2,000 product lines, it will mostly hurt small and medium businesses in India, such as makers of engineering goods.

Despite close political ties, trade between India and the United States, which stood at $126 billion in 2017, is widely seen to be performing at nearly a quarter of its potential.

Trade relations suffered in the past few months after India adopted new rules on e-commerce reining in how companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Walmart Inc-backed Flipkart do business.

Last June, India said it would step up import duties varying from 20 percent to 120 percent on a slew of U.S. farm, steel and iron products, angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminium tariffs.

But it has since repeatedly delayed adopting the higher duties.

Now it’s been heard versatile actor Pankaj Tripathi is joining the cast of ‘Angrezi Medium’ in Udaipur. The two power packed performers will be seen sharing screen space together for the first time. Both Irrfan and Pankaj are the alumni of National School of Drama and represent a very different art form of acting onscreen and are truly a powerhouse of talent put together on screen.

Pankaj and Dinesh Vijan collaborated together for the third time over ‘Angrezi Medium’. Their first stint was for the film Stree followed by Luka Chuppi. Both of them share a great rapport with each other and look forward working together. Pankaj will be seen doing a cameo in the film but it’s going to be one hilarious ride for the audience. To see two such amazing actors together on screen would truly be a treat to the audiences.

When asked Pankaj, he said, “My role is a cameo. It’s my love and respect for Irrfan and my friendship with Dinu that made me say yes for it. I always wanted to work with Irrfan and when Dinu offered this role I immediately agreed to do this role even if it’s just a cameo to begin with.”

Bollywood actress Radhika Madan recently took to her Instagram account to announce that she is going to be a part of Irrfan Khan led ‘Angrezi Medium’. The film has just gone on floors in Udaipur and the actress shared a picture of the clapboard in order to make the announcement. However, she also cleared speculations around the leading lady of the film and confirmed that Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan has been roped in.

Sharing the post, she wrote, “As excited as the man behind! So so so grateful for this new journey,”. She also tagged Kareena Kapoor accidentally revealing that she will indeed be a part of the film.

  • Aslam Khan who was a family friend used to help the father with the paper work at the bank
  • He managed to access some approved cheques and started withdrawing money from January, 2019
  • After his act was reported by India Today, he panicked and started to return the money via internet transfer banking

A day after it came to light that the father of the Kathua rape victim had been duped of his donation money, the culprit has been identified.

Aslam Khan (mentioned in original report), whose name was on the transaction record, turned out to be a family friend. He had ccompanied the adoptive father in January to help withdraw money.

Aslam, who is well- educated accompanied the father to the bank in January as the Bakerwal family is illiterate and resorts to thumb impression for financial transactions. He proved to be of assistance, helping with the paper work.

However, Aslam Khan managed to access some approved cheques and started withdrawing money from January, 2019.

According to a statement by the J&K bank, approximately Rs 10 lakh was transferred into Aslam Khan’s account between January to March this year.

After his act was reported by India Today, he panicked and started to return the money via internet transfer banking.

“Aslam has returned Rs 6 lakh in the account and also promised to return the remaining amount (Rs 5-6 lakh). We spoke to him over the phone. Matter seems to be resolved now. We will wait till Monday to confirm all money has been transferred back into the account,” the adoptive father confirmed.

However, another family member stated that Aslam Khan hasn’t showed up in person since the controversy. He transferred a portion of amount but refused to meet in person, despite being asked by family.

Senior officers in J&K police are waiting for the family to file an official complaint, if the father intends to take the case ahead.

J&K bank maintained that the branch received cheques with requisite approval, hence money was allowed to be withdrawn.

BACKGROUND

On April 24, 2018, Ketto Online Ventures first transferred Rs 18,46,774 to the account — via a crowdfunding campaign. In the next one month, different organisations credited an additional Rs 50,000. On May 28, 2018 the balance in the man’s account was Rs.19,23,774.

Till December 23, over Rs 21 lakh showed in his bank statement with some additional credits. On April 11, only Rs. 35,000 remained.

In the midst of the parliamentary elections, no leader of any party has approached to express continued support to the family. Neither the National Conference nor the PDP — parties that created a furore when the tragedy had struck — have approached them offering support.

‘Criminal Justice’ on Hotstar: Vikrant Massey and Pankaj Tripathi dazzle you in this thriller

Life is fickle, its events unpredictable. When we break into carefree laughter, little do we know if the very next moment could force us into inconsolable sobs. When we plan the next meeting, the next party, little do we know all our planning could be gone for a toss with one stroke of bad luck — and we will be forced to find that strength to fight what we face within.

The same strength which we never know we had till we need it.

'Criminal Justice' on Hotstar: Vikrant Massey and Pankaj Tripathi dazzle you in this thriller

Aditya’s (Vikrant Masey) life is thrown out of gear in just one night. (Photo: A still fromCriminal Justice)

Call it the beauty of live — or life playing a beast on you, when life throws shit at you, you just find no way to duck it. Hotstar’s latest Criminal Justice tells us why planning lives whose very nature is unpredictable begets only disappointments if you are lucky — if you are unlucky, it leaves you shocked.

So, when a young Aditya (Vikrant Masey) excitedly buys a packet of condoms, hoping for a fun-filled night with the woman he has the hots for, he has no clue life is set to screw him hard.

Aditya, who drives a taxi for a cab aggregator First Cabs, is wrapping up a shift when he meets a woman, half-hassled, half doped. Aditya soon finds himself in bed with her and then he forgets life as it was, where he wanted to help his family meet ends, even as he pursued an MBA and played football.

He finds himself in the debauched life of a prison, on charges of rape and murder, with every shred of evidence — circumstantial and forensic — screaming his name out loud as a killer.

If one wants to know why prisons in India have failed to be reform centres, one must watch Criminal Justice. Aditya finds that strength which he did not know he had to live through prison life. Vikrant Masey gets into the very essence of Aditya’s character. His expressions mirror the transformation from innocence to human ruthlessness acquired as a survival instinct in a Darwinian world where only the fittest shall survive.

Prison shows Aditya in a living hell. (Photo: A still fromCriminal Justice)

But this show is not all about darkness.

Just like life, it merges darkness with the light of human kindness. Aditya meets Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi) who is a rainbow, just like most humans are, with colours of not just kindness and humanism — but also monetary greed.

Mishra is an advocate who makes a living by helping petty criminals with legal support.

Pankaj Tripathi presents a whole range of human emotions as advocate Madhav Mishra. (Photo: A still fromCriminal Justice)

Much like Meryl Streep, every twitch on Tripathi’s face is an expression that captures a whole range of human emotions. He is trying to make some money even as he tries to help Aditya. But he also develops a soft corner for him, believing that Aditya is innocent and his middle-class family deserves better.

Aditya’s family is not just struggling to cough up the funds to meet his legal expenses, but also grappling with a bigger question — could their son have indeed raped and killed a woman?

The worn-out walls of the family’s house sketch the details of a lower middle-class life in India that is just one tragedy away from being pushed into poverty.

The depiction of jail life does get stretched in places as directors Tigmanshu Dhulia and Vishal Furia try to bring out several details. They could definitely have clipped a few details though. Thrillers work better when the plot is racy.

This is an adaptation of a show which was aired on BBC in 2008, with the same name, written by Peter Moffat.

In this version, Dhulia and Furia do well overall at capturing the core of this thriller with a talented bunch of actors that includes Jackie Shroff, Mita Vashisht, Pankaj Saraswat, Anupriya Goenka and Rucha Inamdar.
