Police unveil new technology to combat drivers illegally using mobile phones

Police have unveiled a new device which can detect when motorists are using their mobile phones while driving.

Hampshire and Thames Valley police forces are the first to use the new technology which can determine how many cars on a stretch of road have phones being used without hands-free kits.

When the device, created by technology firm Westcotec, spots a phone being used, it will flash a mobile phone symbol at the vehicle to advise the driver to stop using their mobile phone.

It can also enable police to identify hotspots where mobile phones are frequently used by motorists.

A spokesman for the two forces said: “The technology can detect when Bluetooth is being used but cannot detect if a passenger is using the phone, but the sign will still be activated reminding motorists of the distraction of a mobile phone whilst driving.”Aimee Goldsmith died in a crash caused by a driver using his mobile phone (Thames Valley Police/PA)

The campaign is being supported by Kate Goldsmith who lost her daughter Aimee Goldsmith after a lorry driver crashed into the car she was a passenger in while he was using his mobile phone to change music whilst driving.

The 11-year-old was killed along with her stepbrothers Josh Houghton, aged 11, Ethan Houghton, aged 13, and the brothers’ mother Tracey Houghton, aged 45.

Ms Goldsmith said: “I am supporting this campaign and welcome any technology which can assist in educating people and stop them from using their mobile phones whilst driving.

“My daughter’s death was completely avoidable.

“Please don’t use your mobile phone whilst driving, it’s not worth the risk.”

Pc Liz Johnson, a roads safety officer, said: “Research shows us that you are four times more likely to crash if you are using a mobile phone whilst driving, reaction times are around 50% slower than a driver not using a mobile phone.

“It is also apparent that you are twice as likely to be involved in a fatal collision when texting compared with drink driving.”

The new device will be first used on the A34 in Oxfordshire before being used across the Thames Valley and Hampshire areas.

RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “Driving and using a handheld phone do not mix, it is an incredibly dangerous and distracting combination.

“We welcome this technology as it will hopefully make drivers think about what they are doing behind the wheel, and encourage some to put down their phones and concentrate fully on driving.

“While it will no doubt be argued that the technology cannot yet definitively detect drivers that are using handheld phones illegally, we are aware of camera equipment being trialled in other countries which can.

Inmate Nicholas Rotunda Allen, 39, received the phone from someone not incarcerated at the prison and used a caller ID spoofing app to make the call look like it is from Louisiana where the alleged victim lives, Fast Company reported.
Allen told the victim to purchase USD 5,500 in Green dot prepaid cards to have an arrest warrant dismissed. If Allen is convicted on the single wire fraud charge, he could face up to five more years in prison and a fine of up to USD 250,000. 

Officials injured in ‘stone pelting’ over sealing drive in Mayapuri; Arvind Kejriwal says locals beaten up

New Delhi: Officials conducting a sealing drive in Delhi’s Mayapuri area on Saturday sustained injuries when stones were pelted at them even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed that it was Delhi Police which beat up locals in the area and called it “extremely shameful” action.

Around 15 officials sustained injuries in the incident and had to be taken to a hospital, police said.

A team consisting of members of the SDMC and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and police and paramilitary personnel had gone to effect the sealing drive in the area when the incident took place, senior officials said.

The locals started pelting stones at them following which, 12-15 officials suffered minor injuries and were sent to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital,” a senior police official said.

Kejriwal took to Twitter to share a video purportedly showing police officials pelting stones at people and beating them. “It is extremely shameful that the citizens are being treated in this manner by the Centre. The trader community has always supported the BJP with money as well as with votes,” he tweeted.

“But in return, the Centre-led police brutally beat up the traders sending a clear message that they do not want the community’s support in the upcoming polls,” he chief minister added.

Police said a case has been registered in connection with the incident and an investigation initiated.

The National Green Tribunal had slammed the Delhi government for not taking action against illegal scrap industries in Mayapuri that cause pollution.

New Delhi: Violent clashes broke out between locals in Delhi’s Mayapuri and police officials during a drive to seal illegal scrap factories following an NGT order on Saturday. Officials conducting the sealing drive sustained injuries after the traders resorted to stone pelting. However, the locals were also lathi-charged by the police and the para military and some footage shot on mobiles circulated in social media showing even the para military men pelting stones at the protesters. An ITBP personnel was beaten up by the protesters after which some men were seen whisking him to safety.

“A sealing drive was started on Saturday by SDM Delhi cantt along with the staff of MCD and DPCC in Mayapuri scrap market in pursuance of NGT orders. The local scrap dealers started protesting against the sealing and then got violent and resorted to stone pelting. 14 persons, including SDM, DPCC employees, Police personnel including ACP have been injured. A case is being registered,” said a senior police officer.

Reacting to the issue, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the business class has always backed the BJP with its money and votes but the party doesn’t want their support.

“Beating up one’s own traders like this is shameful. They have always backed the BJP with their money and support but in return, the party sealed their shops and lathi-charged them. The BJP is making its intention clear that it doesn’t want their support,” CM Kejriwal tweeted.

The NGT had on Friday slammed the Delhi government for not taking action against illegal scrap industries in Mayapuri that are causing pollution, saying why is the chief secretary feeling helpless in protecting lives of victims.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the chief secretary and the Chairman and Member Secretary, Delhi Pollution Control Committee to respond why they should not be jailed and be prosecuted if illegal activities are not stopped and people remain suffering on account of illegal activities.

The green panel also ordered the officials to appear before it on May 3 with a compliance report.

The NGT said that there is acknowledged failure to comply with the orders of the tribunal by the Delhi government and the chief secretary appears to have merely expressed helplessness in taking action.

Meanwhile, Delhi’ Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta alleged that AAP is involved in this whole chaos and the sealing team was sent by Chief Minister himself. AAP rubbished the allegations later.
