Ms Ocasio-Cortez said having children could have potentially catastrophic consequences for climate change. One presenter suggested she could be “responsible for the end of civilisation”. On Instagram Live, Ms Ocasio-Cortez questioned the ethics surrounding the topic and said “our planet is going to face disaster if we don’t turn this ship around”.
She went on to reference a poll that found younger people may choose not to have children due to worries about the changing environment.
She said: “It’s basically like, there is a scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult and it does lead, I think young people, to have a legitimate question.
“Ya know, is it okay to still have children?
“Not just financially, because people are graduating with 20, 30, 100 thousand dollars of student loan debt, so they can’t even afford to have kids in the house, but there’s also just this basic moral question, like, what do we do?”

Pete Hegseth on a Fox & Friends segment criticised the 29-year-old.
He said: “Not ‘should I have children,’ which is an individual choice, everybody can choose what they want, but ‘is it okay?,’ that’s putting a moral lens on it.
“Are you a bad person if you have kids because you’re going to ruin their lives and you’re going to ruin the planet because they’re going to have a carbon footprint that you’re responsible for?”
His co-host, Jillian Mele, added: “Eventually, if people stop having children, guess what, none of us are going to be here.
“Like, there’s not even going to be Earth anymore.”
Co-host Ainsley Earhardt added: “I don’t want my daughter raised in a socialist environment. I mean, look at Venezuela. That’s what’s bad for the kids.”
Mr Hegseth explained: “And what’s unhealthy for society is when they can’t replace themselves.
“Demographics say 2.1 [children per household] is a healthy, growing country. She said the world is going to end in 10 to 12 years, this is like World War II, this is her religion.”
