Punjab Congress wants to field Manmohan Singh as Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar

Punjab Congress leaders were of the ‘unanimous’ view that a request to field Manmohan Singh as a candidate from Amritsar should be sent to the Congress leadership.

Punjab Congress is keen to field Manmohan Singh as Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar. The who’s who of Punjab Congress requested Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Sunil Jakhar to put their request before the Congress high command.

During a discussion on candidates for the Lok Sabha election, Punjab Congress leaders were of the ‘unanimous’ view that a request to field Manmohan Singh as a candidate from Amritsar should be sent to the Congress leadership.

A senior Punjab Congress leader said, “Party’s MPs, MLAs and other senior leaders have put in a request to Captain Amarinder Singh and Sunil Jakhar that they should request party high command to consider Dr ManMohan Singh as Lok Sabha candidate.”

Punjab Congress is in the process of shortlisting candidates for 13 seats from Punjab for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The list will then be sent to AICC where Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and other members of Congress’s election committee will finalise the names.

Amritsar is a high profile seat which had witnessed an aggressive battle between Congress – which had fielded Captain Amarinder Singh – and BJP – which had fielded Finance Minister Arun Jaitley – as their candidates in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll. Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the seat after he became Punjab CM.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh is a Rajya Sabha MP.
